A deposit-based returnable cup system:
- Step 1: Customers pay a deposit to borrow a takeaway cup at the point of sale at any participating cafe.
- Step 2: They return the cup to any participating cafe when done – ready to be washed and reused.
- Step 3: They get their deposit back in full.

Many single-use disposable cups contain plastic linings or are compostable only under specialist conditions.These are bought and produced at a cost to the businesses as well as the environment.
