Why We’re Quitting Single-Use Cups.

When I decided to put down my thoughts, we couldn’t resist paying homage to Don Draper’s iconic letter from Mad Men.

Single-use takeaway cups. We’ve seen them.

Plastic lids, soggy paper, waste that blows over cliffs and washes into bays. Now we’re overrun with bins full of cups, and clever marketing tells us they’re “biodegradable” or “compostable.”

Convenience became an excuse. An excuse that just isn’t good enough.

Because here’s the truth: recycling is not circular. It’s damage control. By the time a product gets to “end-of-life,” the resources are already extracted, the energy already burned, the waste already created.

Responsibility and action must begin at the start – with design, with materials, with systems that prioritise reuse.

That’s why we launched Cup Club Bude.

A simple idea with a big ambition:
☕ Borrow a cup
♻️ Return it
🔁 Repeat

It’s easy. It’s practical. And it means convenience without the cost to our planet.

This is the future of takeaway culture: not recycling gimmicks, but true circularity.

Because schemes that aren’t circular – aren’t sustainable.

Bude has drawn a line in the sand. And we believe our best work is still ahead of us.
